One day in 1985, Donald Becker, director of the Suzuki Institute of Boston was alone with Dr. Suzuki in his teaching studio and Dr. Suzuki turned to him and said, “The most important thing about my method is helping other people. If you understand that, then you can understand my work”

The Suzuki Institute of Boston is committed to the idea that everyone who really wants to play should have a chance. The scholarship program works like this. Parents who cannot pay the full fee talk to the director and negotiate a fee that they can pay. It only takes two minutes and doesn’t involve filling out forms and providing documentation. We take people at their word. Even at a reduced fee, many families still struggle to come up with the money each week. Once students are in the program, they’re in. If their financial circumstances change for the worse, we do whatever is necessary to enable them to continue. Sometimes the parent learns that they have a serious illness and can no longer work. They know that their child can continue studying. We have students at all levels of tuition and in unusual circumstances, we provide lessons for free and/or rent a violin for the student. Our violin program at the Blue Hill Avenue Early Education Center is funded entirely by grants and gifts.

Here are some examples of what your gift could provide:

$800   Provides an electronic keyboard for recitals and rehearsals
