The Suzuki Institute of Boston offers a comprehensive program of Suzuki Method
instruction providing each student with an individual lesson, instrumental
group class and music reading class every week. We use the materials and teaching
points from the Talent Education Institute in Japan.
The director, Donald Becker, studied with Dr. Suzuki for over three years
in Japan and received the teacher's diploma from the Talent Education Institute
in Matsumoto, Japan.
We offer instruction in violin, viola, 'cello and flute with instructors who
speak Japanese and Chinese as well as English. Our school is committed to Dr.
Suzuki's philosophy of service to other people through our scholarship program
based on long term commitments to individuals and families regardless of financial
resources and without any tests for "talent". The school and the
parents are committed to active recruitment and retention of a diverse student
body. Our policy is that everyone who really wants to study should have a chance.
The Suzuki Institute of Boston was started in 1985 by Donald Becker and has
grown from a dozen students to close to two hundred students and nine faculty members
at eight locations in the Boston Area. The Massachusetts Suzuki Festival, founded
by Donald Becker in 1978, has become an annual event with several hundred children.
The Suzuki Institute has been featured in articles in The
Boston Globe, the
American String Teachers Association Journal, The
Roslindale and West Roxbury Transcript and
the Talent
Education Journal in Japan. It is dedicated to sharing
both Dr. Suzuki's philosophy and his teaching points with families in the greater
Boston
area
Our Philosophy
Dr. Suzuki said that the most important point of his philosophy is service
to other people. The Suzuki Institute is committed to the idea that every student
who really wants to study should have a chance. Every parent in the program
is encouraged to dedicate themselves to the Suzuki Philosophy in this respect.
Our commitment to outreach to low income students and students of color is
reflected in our faculty and students.
Notice of Nondiscriminatory Policy
The Suzuki Institute of Boston admits students of any race, color, national
and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally
accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate
on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of
its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarships and loan programs,
and athletic and other school-administered programs.
